I did not read or watch the news today as is my usual morning routine. Rather, I listened to what God had to say about our nation, His people, and His plans. God reminded me this morning of the promise from 1 Chronicles 7:14 that I mentioned yesterday. I started to say it in my prayers and God stopped me on the tenth word… Humble. “then, If my people, who bear my name will humble…”
I think I am beginning to understand why we are so frustrated. We are looking for answers in all the wrong places. We think we have the answer and are offended when our perfectly crafted, logical, and intelligent solution is not accepted by others. We think of these other people as illogical, unintelligent, or worse, evil. Does Genesis 1:27 not say that God created man in his own image? If that be true, then we are defaming the image of God. We make ourselves judge over our fellow man. This is not a position of humility but incredible arrogance. This is not a position from which God will hear us from heaven.
Even Jesus humbled himself when he prayed in the Garden. It was just hours before he would walk out God’s plan for our salvation (Luke 26:36 & 42) which required his crucifixion. He asks God if there was another way, but then acknowledges God as the way maker. He then submits to the will of the Father. Jesus, the son of God, one-third of Holy Trinity, someone that would soon get up out of his own grave, humbled himself…
In our discourse with one another, do we do that? Do we love our enemy, pray for the lost, do things God’s way, see the people of this world as God sees them? Or are we arrogant in our judgment like John and James and want to “Call down fire on them?” (Luke 9:54). Jesus did not listen to these disciples at that time but rather he rebuked them (Luke 9:55). I am growing more convinced that God will not hear us today either as we call down fire on one another.
So, on Day 2, I am asking you if you would please humble yourself:
- Acknowledge that you may not know the answer. Don’t risk rebuke from God but seek favor.
- Pray for your fellow man – not about them or against them
- Seek God and understand what his answer might be – rather than what CNN, FOX, and MSNBC tell us to think.
