Marraige Applications - Zachariah
Introduction:
The Prophesy of Zachariah:
- The name Zachariah means.
- He prophesied right after Haggai.
- Ezra chapters 5-6 mention both Haggai and Zachariah
- The king mentioned here (Darius) is the King of Persia. Persia would be the modern-day Iran. King Darius was well known for his building projects worldwide and was instrumental in rebuilding the temple. The temple was destroyed when Babylon conquered Israel and captured many (RE: Daniel).
- In 587 BC, King Nebuchadnezzar captured Israel. Later, in 538 BC, the Persians conquered Babylon, and the nation of Israel became the property of the Persians. The people of Israel lived in their homes, yet a foreign (gentile) king ruled them. They must have felt stuck, and they could do nothing about it. They knew they should be working on the temple, but why? They wanted to serve God but were so busy just getting by it was easier to “just get along” and not try to change anything.
- God calls Haggai, Ezra, and Zachariah to preach the word that calls the people to do something extraordinary… rebuild the temple. Haggai tells them it is time to stop living in want and bless God with your actions (V:6). He asks them to "Consider your ways!"
Today, we are to build the temple by going into all the world and making disciples. The prophecy of Zachariah is another example of "These days are those days, and those days are these days." We need to listen to the prophets; they tell us the way, the truth, and the life.
