Hebrews - Marriage Applications
Hebrews has 13 chapters. The Married Couples’ Bible Study will typically cover a single chapter of the Bible in each 90-minute session. For the Book of Hebrews, we will combine some chapters, resulting in 11 application pages.
Introduction:
- It is not clearly known who wrote the Book of Hebrews. It is considered unlikely that Paul wrote this book, even though much church tradition has given him credit for it.
- The central theme of this book is proving the superiority of Christ over the Old Testament law and the prophets. Jesus is depicted as the once-for-all sacrifice that allows us to draw closer to God than the system of sacrifice prescribed by temple worship in the OT Law.
- Hebrews was likely written before the temple was destroyed, since it makes no mention of it. Jesus predicted that not one stone of the temple would stand on another, and the Romans did just that in 70 AD. So, we know Hebrews was written after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, but before the destruction of the temple.
- The book of Hebrews contains three important warnings every Christian needs to heed.
- Warning not to neglect our salvation (Chapter 2)
- Warning about unbelief and Disobedience (Chapters 3 & 4)
- Warning about Spiritual Immaturity (Chapters 5 & 6)
- The author of Hebrews demonstrates how we are to move from the Old Testament faith to a walk with Christ in the New Covenant. We are no longer related to God through a system of blood sacrifices but have been made a royal priesthood through our relationship with Christ and His final sacrifice.
