Ruth - Marriage Applications

The "Married Couples Small Groups" ministry aims to expose married couples to God's Word and help them incorporate it into their marriage. In addition, the document's purpose is to provide you (the small group leader) with suggested applications.

These are just suggestions to help you prepare for your group. If you have a different application, please use it. We acknowledge that finding an application to teach can be complex, so these are provided as support to you, not as a directive to teach.

Please take note of the "Call to Action" for each application. Perhaps a good opening activity would be to hear from volunteers about how they answered the call. Perhaps ask:

“How has God blessed their marriage?”

“What are you hearing from God?”

There are 28 chapters in Matthew. The Bible Study will usually cover a single chapter of the Bible in each 90-minute session. So, this book has four applications, one on each of the following pages.

Introduction to the Book of Ruth

The book of Ruth is a beautiful picture of how Jesus redeems us if we will submit to his plan and lay at his feet. Ruth the Moabite comes to Bethlehem after her husband has died as the ward of her widowed mother-in-law. They are not sure how they will live or who will redeem them from their plight. God provides them food through Ruth’s gleaning and the generosity of one man. God further permanently provides their daily bread and legacy by sending a redeemer.

The book starts with the tragedy of losing all the men in the family. Then Ruth shows us a perfect picture of the covenant when she abandons her people, customs, and gods to join her husband’s family. Next, the women struggle even to have enough to eat, but remain confident that God will provide. Finally, Boaz shows up as the redeemer kinsman. This is a story of God’s faithfulness to the end.
